This week we are learning about Victorian era and Steampunk art. Steampunk art was originally from the Victorian era. Steampunk art is a mix of modern and old technology such as gear, clocks and some other steampunk stuffs. Our first activity before making DLO is to draw something that is connected to steampunk, I drew a fish that has a gear on it, you can do any animal and just make it like its made out of metal. For this activity I worked with Carl, we work collaboratively to do this activity.
I am a Year 8 student at Panmure Bridge School in Auckland, NZ. I am in Learning Space 2 and my teachers are Ms Kirkpatrick and Mrs Anderson.

Today we have been gathering information about what make a book boring. We joined as a class and rotated around the room answering questions on a paper. We would then use Google spread sheet and create a graph, showing what makes a book boring. We have found out that most people find a book boring due to the unattractive pictures and Vocabulary.

During this commemoration we I read the pray at the start of the commemoration, Tiava and Jeremiah (head boy and head girl) read the oath, and Ms Kirkpatrick (deputy principal) read In Flanders Field. During the commemoration we were silent for a minute to remember the soldiers who died during World War 1. There was also 3 olive tree to represent the past, present, and future. We also played the Last Post which is where we were silent for a minute. After our commemoration we had the member from the NZ defense fore speak to us. Bridge Labeling
Today for inquiry we made our own version of the Panmure bridge on a google drawing. We labeled all of the different parts of the bridge and that are used to build the bridge. There are 4 different parts to the bridge that is the bridge deck so people and cars can go across the iron swing opens so the boats can get to the other side, abutment is to hold the iron swing and the piles holds the bridge deck and prevents it from collapsing.

Spaghetti Bridge Building
For the last two weeks Miss Kirkpatrick Inquiry group has been building bridges out of spaghetti. This was a very fun and creative piece of work we have done this year. We would draw a type of bridge we would like to build with all the correct measurements. We would then be provided with : a packet of spaghetti, rubber bands and tape. We would use all the equipment to construct our bridge. Each spaghetti was around 25 centimeters so it would be difficult, what type of bridge it was and how long or tall it was. Once all the planing was done we would have to make the deck of the bridge. We would use the rubber bands to make the spaghetti stay in bundles of ten. After we have constructed our bridge we would use an S hook to hang bricks to test the stability and strength on the bridge. My groups bridge was able to withstand 6 bricks.

Why Do People Build Bridges
Why do we build bridges?
Bridges help us today all over the world for specific reasons. Bikes, cars and skateboards use bridges to make transport faster and easier. Bridges are built to get from point A across to point B faster and easier.
Unfortunately in the past the Tamaki bridge we know today did not exist in the 18th century. Thus crossing the river was peoples only choice to get to their destination. Taking punts or boats were the only common choices to get across faster and easier. Although sometimes there was a consequence to crossing. People would drown in the process of getting across. This made the river very dangerous to some people, it was so common that drowning was called the New Zealand disease.
In the 19th century in 1865 the first bridge was built and was the start of fast transport. Currently taking a bridge is fast transport for most of us. But again traveling back in time people had to pay to cross the Tamaki bridge in the 19th century. This also was the start for dry transport.
It’s easier to see the truth on why people build bridges now. The point was that it could save lives, faster transport and for boats to cross the river. There's much more than just the view from a bridge or just crossing it.

Exponents ( Powers )
Today for math we have been focusing on exponents which is also known as powers. You can solve them very easily if you know your times table. For example if your writing 10² then you would write 10 x 10 = 100. But if it is a cubed question then you would write it like this 10³ 10 x 10 x 10.

Character Book Review
For the last 3 weeks Mrs Anderson's reading group has been doing book reviews on their books. A book review is when you read a book and you do a task. At the moment I've already completed my comic strip about the book. I have know moved onto creating a drawing on the setting the book took place on. Then I would create a movie trailer all about the book.

How to Tell Analogue Time
Analogue Time
Have you ever wondered how to tell analogue time? Analogue time has 12 numbers there are 24 hours in a day. The 24 hours are halved in 2 periods of time. Am and pm remind you what time of the day it is.
There are also hands on an analogue clock, there are two hands, the big hand and the small hand, the big hand tells minutes and the small hand tells hours. The easy thing to remember about analogue time is that it is divided into 4 quarters. 12, 3, 6 and 9. The hour hand will go around the clock for 60 minutes until the next hour.
Now you should understand most things you need to know. All that is left is to teach you how to read the clock. When the small small hand is on the 5 and the long hand is on the 1, the time would be 5:05. And if the short hand was on the 6 and the long hand was on the 4, the time would be 6:20.
Now I hope you have learnt how to tell analog time, it is not too difficult to tell analog time and it is not too simple to learn it, analog time can make miracles happen, it can save you from being late on a special occasion and avoid you from many problems.
Today we have wroten a explanation about how to tell analogue time. When the small hand is on the 5 and the long hand is on the 1, the time would be 5:05. And if the short hand was on the 6 and the long hand was on the 4, the time would be 6:20.

Sky Tower Visit
Today LS2, LS1 and room 5 visited the sky tower to learn about its features. Our class was split into two groups, and both groups got the chance to walk around the Sky Tower. Each groups went to three stations, the theater, the observation deck and the emergency room. Each room was apart of the sky tower and had lots of details to them. We watched several clips of the Sky Tower history, and what places you could visit. Some interesting facts I found about of the Sky Tower is that, the Sky Tower is 338 meters tall, It weighs the same amount as 6000 elephants. We would like to thank Douglas Bates for donating the money to make this happen.
Why Sleep Is So Important
Through the previous weeks my reading group worked collaboratively together to create a DLO about Sleep. Today my group presented our sleep DLO to everyone. The type of reading we used to create our DLO was reciprocal reading. We also used a strategy called inferring. Inferring means reading between lines and combining clues from a particular text and using our prior knowledge to get an idea. We all used our great researching skills to find interesting information and facts about sleep. At the end we summarized our DLO.

Scale Drawing
Last week we have been doing scale drawings. First you would need to find a photo that you would want to draw. Then you would want to draw your grid over your photo you have chosen, each box would be 1 cm square. You would then get your enlargement paper you would have to draw the grid two times bigger than you last one. The best strategy for drawing your picture would be drawing row by row. What I found hard was drawing the grid for the enlargement paper.
